The governor declared that illegal mining has become a major driver of insecurity in Bauchi State and called for stronger intelligence gathering and greater collaboration among security agencies and neighbouring states to combat the growing threat.
Mohammed gave the directive on Wednesday while receiving the new 3 Division, Nigerian Army General Officer Commanding (GOC) and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Maxwell Dangana, during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Bauchi.
Expressing concern over the activities of illegal miners, the governor urged the military to intensify intelligence operations and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
He stressed that no individual should be considered untouchable, even if they are members of his own family.
“I want you to intensify your intelligence. Don’t spare anybody. Even if my son is involved in illegal mining, deal with him decisively,” Mohammed said.
The governor alleged that some influential individuals and powerful stakeholders continue to profit from illegal mining, using their influence to frustrate efforts aimed at restoring peace and security in affected communities.
According to him, the huge financial gains associated with illegal mining have encouraged criminal activities and undermined security operations in parts of the state.
Bauchi to Invest ₦3 Billion Security Support in Equipment
Mohammed reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies, revealing that part of the ₦3 billion security intervention fund recently provided by the Federal Government to each state would be used to strengthen security operations.
He announced plans to procure operational vehicles and other logistics to improve the effectiveness of security personnel across Bauchi State.
“We are going to purchase vehicles very soon. The Federal Government has given each state governor three billion naira, and we intend to use it properly for security. We are not going to use it for any other purpose,” he stated.
Army Seeks More Support
Earlier, Major General Dangana explained that his visit formed part of an operational assessment tour of formations and units under his command.
He appealed to the Bauchi State Government to sustain its support for troops, particularly in addressing operational challenges in Alkaleri Local Government Area, where security operations have been affected by poor road infrastructure.
According to the GOC, bad roads continue to hamper the movement of troops and delay emergency responses during military operations.
Governor Promises Road Construction, More Military Bases
Responding to the concerns, Governor Mohammed disclosed that the road leading to Mansur, one of the communities affected by insecurity, has already been awarded for construction.
He expressed confidence that the project would improve accessibility, facilitate the movement of security personnel, and strengthen efforts to tackle criminal activities in the area.
The governor also urged the Nigerian Army to establish additional military formations in strategic parts of the state, particularly around Azare and Tafawa Balewa, to enhance security coverage and improve rapid response to emerging threats.
He assured the military of his administration’s continued partnership and support in safeguarding lives and property across Bauchi State, describing security as a shared responsibility requiring sustained collaboration between government and security agencies.
