A father of 11, Lawal Hamisu, has approached the Shari’a Court II sitting at Magajin Gari in Kaduna, asking the court to compel his 27-year-old daughter, Fatima Lawal, to find a suitor and get married.
The matter came up before the court on Tuesday, July 21, where the father, through his counsel, H.B. Debo, argued that his daughter was of marriageable age but had yet to present a serious suitor despite attracting several admirers.
According to the complainant, Fatima has obtained her Higher National Diploma (HND) but has not taken steps towards marriage.
“She should get a suitor, present him in court, and the court should marry her off since her mother has poisoned their minds against me,” he said.
Responding to the claims, Fatima told the court that she currently has no serious suitor.
She explained that although she has admirers, none of them has formally proposed marriage to her.
Presiding over the matter, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi described the case as delicate because it involves a dispute between a parent and his child.
The judge said he would hold separate one-on-one discussions with both the father and the daughter to better understand the issues surrounding the case before offering appropriate guidance.
After listening to both parties, the court adjourned the matter until August 3 for a ruling.
