INEC Chair to ADC: Proceed With Convention and Lose 2027 Mandate in Court [VIDEO]

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has cautioned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) against proceeding with its planned national convention, warning that such a move could have serious legal consequences ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan stressed that failure to comply with established electoral guidelines in organising party activities particularly conventions could expose the party to post-election legal challenges, even if it emerges victorious at the polls.

According to him, any breach of the Electoral Act or INEC regulations during the conduct of a party’s convention could be used as grounds in court to nullify the party’s eventual election win. He noted that in such circumstances, the judiciary may go as far as declaring the runner-up in the election as the rightful winner.

The INEC boss emphasized that political parties must strictly adhere to laid-down procedures and regulatory frameworks governing their internal processes, including conventions, primaries, and candidate nominations.

He further warned that non-compliance could undermine the legitimacy of candidates produced by such processes, ultimately affecting the party’s standing in any electoral contest.

The development highlights growing concerns over internal party compliance with electoral laws as political parties begin early preparations for the 2027 elections.
