Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet with President Bola Tinubu on Sunday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja as part of an official state visit.
This significant event marks the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Nigeria in nearly two decades, underscoring a renewed commitment to deepening the ties between the two nations.
According to an official statement from presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Prime Minister Modi is expected to arrive in Abuja later in the day, beginning a historic diplomatic engagement. This visit comes 17 years after former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh visited Nigeria in 2007, during which a strategic partnership was established between the countries. That partnership paved the way for increased cooperation in various fields, and Modi’s visit aims to build upon that foundation.
During the meeting, President Tinubu and Prime Minister Modi will engage in bilateral discussions focused on enhancing the Nigeria-India relationship across multiple domains. The two leaders are expected to explore opportunities for greater collaboration in trade and investment, digital technology, cultural exchanges, and other critical sectors. Both countries share strong historical and economic ties, and this meeting could lead to new initiatives aimed at mutual economic growth and cultural enrichment.
In a statement regarding the visit, Onanuga noted that both leaders would also participate in a formal signing ceremony for a series of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs). These agreements are designed to strengthen cooperation in key areas, including technology transfer, health, and energy, with the aim of fostering sustainable development for both nations.
