A middle-aged woman who went viral on social media after confronting police officers with a knife during her arrest over alleged Indian hemp sales has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command.
The incident reportedly occurred in Ijebu Igbo, headquarters of Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The woman attracted widespread attention after a video showing her confrontation with police officers surfaced online.
In the viral video, the woman, dressed in a green gown, was initially seen sitting inside a vehicle while angrily raining insults and curses on the police officers who had arrested her.
She later stepped out of the vehicle holding a knife and moved aggressively towards a female police officer who appeared to be recording the incident.
Speaking in Yoruba, the woman questioned why the officers were allegedly targeting her and accused them of repeatedly harassing her over the alleged sale of Indian hemp.
“Why are you troubling us, are we the only ones selling Indian hemp? And you have continued to harass us repeatedly, it will never be well with you…” she said.
The video generated numerous reactions online, with Nigerians debating the circumstances surrounding the arrest as well as the woman’s conduct towards the officers.
Confirming her arrest on Friday, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the suspect had been taken into custody and that investigations were ongoing.
“The suspect has been arrested and the matter is already under investigation,” Babaseyi said.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Oluwasina Ogungbade, SAN, also confirmed that the woman would be prosecuted.
“I have contacted the CP over the viral video and I was told that the woman will be charged to court today,” Ogungbade said.
The specific charges against the woman had not been publicly disclosed at the time of the report. However, the investigation is expected to establish whether any offences were committed during the incident.
The viral video continues to generate reactions online as attention shifts to the woman’s impending court appearance.
