Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing him of displaying what he described as “fake” humility in a bid to win votes ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing youths in Rivers State during an engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The minister questioned Obi’s practice of celebrating his birthdays at Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and buying roasted corn by the roadside, arguing that such public displays of modesty were inconsistent with the former Anambra State governor’s conduct while in office.
According to Wike, Obi’s recent activities were politically motivated and designed to present him to Nigerians as a humble and people-oriented leader ahead of the next presidential election.
The FCT minister challenged the former governor to explain why he did not adopt similar practices during his eight years in office in Anambra State.
In his words:
“Make him the president of social media so that he can be going to IDP camps, so that he will be buying corn on the road then you will say, ‘Oh! Very humble.’ Humble where?
“It’s fake. Who are you going to deceive? When you were a governor, you didn’t go to the IDP camp to do your birthday, you didn’t go to buy fuel by yourself, all of a sudden, just because you want to be president you are now going. Who are you going to deceive?”
