Fresh questions have emerged over the death of Onyeabo Donald Chimezie, a 500-level Law student of the University of Nigeria‘s Enugu Campus (UNEC), after his sister alleged that he may have been murdered rather than being the victim of an accident.
Donald, who was 22 years old, sustained life-threatening injuries on April 13, 2026, after reportedly falling from an unfinished building near the office of the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He landed on exposed iron rods, suffering severe injuries to his head and leg.
Despite months of intensive medical treatment, the student succumbed to his injuries on June 29, just one day before his 22nd birthday.
In an emotional Facebook post shared on Tuesday, Donald’s sister, Cynthia Onyeabo, revealed that while the family initially accepted the incident as a tragic accident, new information has led her to suspect that her brother may have been deliberately pushed or thrown from the building.
According to her, the possibility of foul play has deepened the family’s grief and strengthened her resolve to seek justice.
“I told myself that no matter how long it took, I would eventually write something about my brother publicly,” she wrote.
“I have been in denial for the past few weeks. Perhaps, in some ways, I still am.”
She recounted receiving the devastating phone call informing her that her brother had fallen from a high-rise building and had been impaled by metal rods before rushing to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital>, where she witnessed the extent of his injuries.
“The sight that met me when I got to UNTH the following day was something I still struggle to comprehend,” she said.
“I tried to hold on to my faith and remain strong for him and for his surviving twin, even as I was gradually falling apart inside.”
Cynthia disclosed that for weeks she found solace in believing the incident was purely accidental, saying she could not bear the thought that someone might have intentionally harmed her brother.
However, she now says circumstances surrounding the incident have caused her to question that belief.
“What hurts the most, and what I may never forgive myself for, is that I desperately held on to the belief that it was an accident,” she wrote.
“But now, I have reason to believe that my brother may have been pushed or thrown.”
Describing Donald as a quiet and reserved young man, Cynthia rejected any suggestion that he might have been involved in activities that could have led to violence.
She said her brother spent nearly five years pursuing his law degree and was widely known among classmates as someone who kept to himself.
“He was a reserved person, and many of his classmates and other students knew him as a loner. He kept to himself. He lived a relatively quiet life,” she stated.
The grieving sister appealed for justice, expressing hope that the truth surrounding her brother’s death would eventually emerge.
She prayed that anyone responsible for the incident would be held accountable, insisting she would not stop demanding answers.
“I pray that, before long, the truth is revealed and those responsible are brought to account. I will not stop praying for justice. I will not stop praying that the truth comes to light, no matter how long it takes,” she wrote.
“My brother deserves justice. And I deserve to know what truly happened to him.”
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the university or law enforcement authorities confirming Cynthia’s allegation of foul play. Her claims remain allegations, and investigations would be required to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Donald’s death.
