Nigeria Beat Madagascar 2-1 in AFCON 2027 Qualifier as Debutants Ilenikhena, Usor Complete Comeback

Nigeria’s Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign on a winning note after coming from behind to defeat Madagascar 2-1 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.

Madagascar took an early lead after catching the Nigerian defence on the counter-attack, beating goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and silencing the home supporters.

The Super Eagles, however, responded strongly and restored parity in the first minute of added time before the break.

Debutant George Ilenikhena found the back of the net to make it 1-1 and mark his senior international debut with a goal.

The equaliser gave Nigeria renewed confidence as both sides headed into the dressing room level at half-time.

After the restart, the Super Eagles increased the pressure as captain Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi helped Nigeria take control of the midfield and sustain attacks against the visitors.

The pressure eventually paid off when Moses Usor scored in the second half to complete Nigeria’s comeback and put the hosts ahead.

Madagascar struggled to find a response as Nigeria held on to secure all three points from their opening Group L fixture.

The victory gives head coach Eric Chelle a winning start to Nigeria’s 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

Nigeria will now turn their attention to their next Group L fixture against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29.

On the same day, Madagascar will host Tanzania as the other Group L teams continue their qualifying campaign.

The Super Eagles began the qualifiers without star striker Victor Osimhen, who was ruled out of the opening fixtures due to injury.

Following Friday’s results, Nigeria have three points and sit second in Group L, behind Guinea-Bissau on goal difference. Tanzania and Madagascar remain without a point.
