Nigerian internet usage has seen a significant decline, with approximately 64.3 million mobile lines deactivated in the past year.
This drop is attributed to various economic hardships, including inflation and reduced disposable income, leading many users to cut back on non-essential services such as mobile internet.
Reports indicate that these deactivations represent about 38.6% of the active mobile subscriptions in Nigeria, which had reached around 166 million lines before the decline. The trend reflects broader challenges in the economy, including rising costs of living that affect many Nigerians’ ability to maintain internet access.
Interestingly, despite this decline in mobile subscriptions, Nigeria has one of the highest proportions of internet traffic coming from mobile devices, with over 81% of internet traffic originating from mobile users. This highlights a critical reliance on mobile internet access in the country, even as economic pressures force many to reduce their mobile service usage.
