A 66-year-old Nigerian national identified simply as Solomon has died while in custody at a correctional facility in Greater Noida, raising concerns over the health conditions of foreign inmates facing trial abroad.

Solomon, who was being held as an undertrial prisoner, reportedly passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026, after suffering a cardiac arrest. Authorities disclosed that he had been battling multiple long-term health complications, including hypertension and advanced kidney disease, prior to his death.

According to prison officials, the incident began on Friday morning when Solomon suddenly developed breathing difficulties within the jail premises. His condition quickly worsened, leading to a cardiac arrest. He was immediately rushed to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Despite efforts by medical personnel to stabilize him, doctors later confirmed his death at the hospital. Officials noted that the exact cause of death would be officially determined after the completion of mandatory legal and medical procedures.

Solomon had been in judicial custody since May 31, 2023, following his arrest under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He was being held at the Gautam Budh Nagar District Jail in Luksar village at the time of the incident.

Authorities confirmed that the hospital management alerted the Ecotech-I Police Station immediately after his death. His family members, along with relevant intelligence agencies, have since been notified, while further legal formalities are ongoing in line with standard procedures.

Prison officials also revealed that Solomon had been receiving medical care for his deteriorating health at various hospitals across Delhi and Meerut before his death, indicating that his condition had remained critical for some time.

The late inmate was among 10 foreign nationals arrested on May 17, 2023, during a major anti-narcotics operation carried out by the Greater Noida Police. Acting on intelligence, a police team intercepted a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal substances, leading to the arrest of the occupants.

Subsequent investigations led authorities to a residential property in the Theta sector, where they uncovered an alleged drug manufacturing facility. During the raid, law enforcement officials recovered significant quantities of illicit substances, including cocaine and approximately 46 kilograms of MDMA, along with chemicals and equipment used in the production of synthetic drugs.

Following the operation, the suspects were charged under multiple provisions of the NDPS Act, as well as Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, marking one of the region’s notable crackdowns on international drug trafficking networks.

Solomon’s death has now added a new dimension to the case, as legal and diplomatic processes continue surrounding both the incident and the ongoing trial of the remaining suspects.
