The Delta State Police Command has uncovered what it described as a disturbing case involving a 17-year-old girl who allegedly staged her own abduction in collaboration with friends in order to extort money from her mother.
According to the police, the teenager reportedly orchestrated the fake kidnapping and demanded a ransom of N500,000, creating panic and emotional distress for her family. Investigations revealed that after the money was paid, the girl allegedly used the proceeds to purchase clothing and other personal items.
Authorities expressed concern over the emotional and financial toll the incident has taken on the girl’s mother, a subsistence farmer who depends on modest earnings from agricultural work to support her household.
In a statement, the command condemned the act, describing it as a troubling example of how young people can become involved in deceptive and criminal behaviour.
