The Obidient Movement has announced a nationwide protest tagged #OccupyINEC, demanding the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over what it described as a growing threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, the group warned that the country is at a “critical point,” alleging that key democratic institutions are under pressure and losing public confidence.
According to the movement, INEC’s independence is increasingly being questioned, with concerns that the commission is no longer perceived as neutral under the current administration.
Key Demands
The group outlined several demands, including:
- Immediate resignation of the INEC Chairman over alleged loss of credibility
- An end to what it described as political persecution and harassment of opposition figures
- Protection of Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system
- Full autonomy for political parties without external interference
The movement stressed that when institutions lose credibility, the will of the people is put at risk, making urgent reforms necessary.
#OccupyINEC Protest Plan
As part of its response, the group announced plans for a coordinated nationwide protest across all states and the Federal Capital Territory.
In Abuja, protesters are expected to converge at the ADC National Headquarters before marching peacefully to the INEC headquarters. The exact date for the demonstration is yet to be disclosed.
Supporters across the country have been urged to organise locally and participate in what the group described as a disciplined and peaceful action.
“Not Anger, But Duty”
The Obidient Movement emphasized that the protest is not driven by anger but by a sense of responsibility to defend democratic values.
“We will remain peaceful, we will remain lawful, but we will not stand by while our democracy is weakened,” the statement read.
The group also warned against any drift toward a one-party system, insisting that Nigerians must unite to protect the nation’s political diversity.
As political tensions continue to rise ahead of the 2027 elections, the planned protest signals what could become a major test of public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system and democratic institutions.
