Soldier Killed In Abia State A Day After Kanu’s Life Sentence

A Nigerian soldier has been killed in Aba, Abia State, barely 24 hours after the sentencing of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment.

The soldier, identified as Lance Corporal David, was attacked last Friday at his father’s house on Ngwa Road in Aba around 2 pm.

A military source said, “He was on pass, so he decided to visit his relatives in Aba. However, he was killed a day after the life sentence given to Nnamdi Kanu.”

The killing has prompted warnings from military authorities, who urged soldiers, particularly those travelling to the South-East, to take extra precautions.

Another source confirmed, “Yes, it’s true. One LCpl David, who was on sick leave, was murdered at his father’s house by unknown gunmen.”

He further advised personnel, “If you are on pass, be vigilant. Do not sleep carelessly or move around unnecessarily. Especially those travelling to the East, remain cautious. Do not trust your village people completely as a soldier. Your safety must always come first. Stay sharp and stay alive.”

The murder occurred a day after the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Kanu on all seven terrorism charges and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The judgment by Justice James Omotosho has triggered widespread anger and condemnation across the South-East, contributing to rising insecurity.

The South-East region has witnessed frequent attacks in recent times, including killings, abductions and destruction of government facilities. Security operatives have been repeatedly targeted by armed men described by authorities as “unknown gunmen.”

The Nigerian government has consistently accused IPOB of masterminding the violence, but the group has denied involvement.
