At least ten students from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, in Oyo State were hospitalized on Tuesday, February 11, after reportedly inhaling an unidentified gaseous substance during a dispute between two individuals.
According to reports, the affected students, who belong to the Science Laboratory and Technology Department, had just completed a test and were seated in their lecture hall when an altercation broke out between two students. As bystanders attempted to de-escalate the situation, one of the individuals allegedly released a mysterious substance into the air, triggering an immediate reaction among those present.
Witnesses stated that several students who inhaled the substance began collapsing, with some losing consciousness. Emergency responders and school authorities quickly intervened, transporting the affected students to the Ring Road State Hospital and the University College Hospital (UCH), where they are currently receiving medical attention. Officials have confirmed that their conditions have stabilized.
Government’s Swift Response
Following a distress call, the Oyo State government took immediate action to address the situation. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, led an emergency response team to the institution, overseeing the swift evacuation of the students to medical facilities.
Dr. Ajetunmobi later visited the hospitals to assess the students’ conditions firsthand. She assured the public that the affected students were receiving proper medical care and had shown signs of improvement.
Emphasizing the need for accountability, she called on The Polytechnic’s management to launch a thorough investigation into the incident, ensuring that those responsible are identified and held accountable. Additionally, she underscored the importance of educating students about the risks associated with violence and reckless behaviors that could endanger public safety.
Reaffirming the Oyo State Ministry of Health’s commitment to protecting residents’ well-being, Dr. Ajetunmobi pledged that the government remains prepared to respond swiftly to any health-related emergencies.
Polytechnic Management Pledges Action
The Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Dr. Taiwo, expressed appreciation for the state government’s rapid response and medical assistance. He assured the public that the institution would take decisive action to identify those involved in the incident and implement necessary disciplinary measures to prevent future occurrences.
While investigations are underway, authorities have urged students to remain calm and cooperate fully to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.
