The House of Representatives descended into chaos on Tuesday as lawmakers clashed over President Bola Tinubu’s contentious Tax Reform Bills during a session that was initially unrelated to the issue.
The uproar began when Akin Rotimi, the House spokesperson and Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee, made a polarizing comment while presenting a report on the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board. Rotimi, who was standing in for the absent Committee Chair, Boma Goodhead, introduced himself and made a remark linking his state’s support to the controversial tax reform agenda.
“My name is Akin Rotimi Jr. I represent the people of Ekiti North comprising Ikole and Oye Local Governments. Mr. Speaker, I am from Ekiti State, the first state whose National Assembly Caucus has unanimously endorsed the tax bills,” Rotimi said.
The statement immediately triggered an outcry from several lawmakers, who vocally opposed the claim, chanting, “No, No, No!” Their protests halted proceedings, creating a tense atmosphere in the chamber.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas swiftly intervened to restore order. Addressing the situation, Abbas distanced the House from Rotimi’s comment and emphasized the need to remain focused on the topic at hand. “Restrict yourself to the subject matter. We are not discussing tax bills, as this is a very controversial issue. On your behalf, I withdraw the statement,” the Speaker said firmly.
Following the Speaker’s intervention, Rotimi issued an apology and retracted his earlier remark. Despite this, the lawmakers remained dissatisfied, with many insisting that his comment had derailed the discussion and compromised the neutrality of the session.
In response to their concerns, some members called for the report on the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board to be completely withdrawn. The protests continued until Rotimi, bowing to mounting pressure, agreed to step down the report. “I seek the leave of the Speaker and honourable members to step down the report,” he conceded.
The incident highlights the sharp divisions among lawmakers over President Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills, which have sparked widespread debate across the country. Critics argue that the proposed reforms could impose additional burdens on Nigerians already grappling with economic challenges, while proponents claim they are necessary to stabilize public finances and drive development.
