A 19-year-old Nigerian teenager living in the United Kingdom has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old man in a case described by investigators as a senseless act of violence triggered by a dispute over a stolen bicycle.
The incident occurred on June 6, 2024, in Deptford, south-east London, where the victim, Robert Robinson, was attacked on Carteret Way. According to the Metropolitan Police, the assault was “vicious” and sustained, involving multiple stab wounds. Despite emergency responders’ efforts, Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dispute Began With Earlier Robbery
Investigators said the violence stemmed from an earlier incident that same day in which the teenager robbed a 17-year-old of his bicycle and mobile phone on Deptford High Street. The confrontation that followed later escalated into the deadly attack involving knife-wielding assailants.
Attempted Escape and Arrest
After the killing, the suspect fled the country on June 7, 2024, travelling to Nigeria in what authorities believe was an attempt to evade justice. Following months of investigation, homicide detectives tracked his movements and arrested him upon his return to Britain at Gatwick Airport in February 2025.
Trial and Conviction
The case was heard at Old Bailey, where a jury found him guilty of murder on February 10, 2026. He was also convicted of robbery and possession of a bladed article.
On February 18, 2026, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment, ordering that he must serve a minimum of 21 years before becoming eligible for parole.
Others Also Convicted
The killing formed part of a wider prosecution involving two other teenagers from Lewisham, who were earlier convicted of Robinson’s murder in May 2025. They also received life sentences, with minimum terms exceeding two decades.
