Evangelist Christian Chukwuka has raised concerns over the alleged prolonged detention of an aged man and his first son, who have reportedly spent more than 10 years in prison in Imo State over a case involving another son who allegedly fled after a fatal altercation.
According to Chukwuka, the aged man’s son was involved in a fight with another individual, which allegedly resulted in the person’s death.
He claimed that after the suspect reportedly fled the area, security authorities arrested his father and first son while efforts were being made to locate the fleeing suspect.
Chukwuka alleged that the aged man and his first son have remained in prison for over a decade despite the circumstances surrounding the case and the fact that the person authorities were reportedly searching for had allegedly absconded.
The evangelist has therefore appealed to the Imo State Government, relevant law enforcement and judicial authorities, human rights organisations and concerned individuals to intervene in the matter.
He called for the case to be reviewed to establish the circumstances surrounding the prolonged detention and ensure that appropriate legal action is taken.
Chukwuka urged the relevant authorities to look into the matter and take whatever steps are required in accordance with the law, particularly if the allegations are confirmed.
The case has raised questions about prolonged pre-trial detention, due process and the circumstances under which relatives of an alleged suspect may be held in connection with a criminal case.
