A man has raised concerns over the ongoing reconstruction of the Onitsha Head Bridge, particularly the new road demarcation separating vehicles travelling in opposite directions.
According to him, the new arrangement could create difficulties for motorists if a vehicle breaks down in the middle of the bridge.
He explained that if a car or truck develops a fault and becomes stationary on one side of the bridge, vehicles behind it may have limited options to navigate around the obstruction because of the newly created separation.
He noted that motorists could previously move temporarily into the opposite lane to pass a broken-down vehicle while waiting for it to be removed.
However, he expressed concern that the current design may prevent such manoeuvres, potentially resulting in traffic congestion whenever a vehicle breaks down on the bridge.
He therefore called attention to the need for adequate provisions for dealing with vehicle breakdowns and emergencies along the bridge, particularly given its importance to motorists travelling through Onitsha.
