A 12-year-old boy in Monroe, United States, left police officers astonished after he was discovered driving himself to school when he missed his morning bus.
According to a report by New York Post, officers became suspicious after spotting an SUV around 8:30 a.m. with unusual behaviour on the road. A routine stop revealed that the vehicle was displaying a fictitious license plate, prompting further checks.
To their surprise, officers found a child seated behind the wheel. When questioned, the boy reportedly explained that he had missed his school bus and decided to take matters into his own hands by driving himself to school.
Authorities immediately contacted a school resource officer, who ensured the boy was safely transported to his campus without incident.
Police have since issued a strong reminder to parents and guardians about the importance of securing vehicle keys and preventing children from gaining unsupervised access to cars. They stressed that allowing an unlicensed minor to operate a vehicle presents serious safety dangers not only to the child but also to other road users.
Officials also confirmed that the case has been referred to social services, while law enforcement continues to work with the family to address the situation and ensure the child’s welfare moving forward.
