Troops of the Nigeria Army have stormed Bille, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State following the killing of soldiers by pirates
It was gathered that the pirates, who terrorise the community, also seized the soldiers’ weapons on Sunday.
Three troops, according to sources, broke into houses in Bille, and arrested, the traditional ruler, LN.C Herbert, his personal aide, Damiete Alabo, and some youths.
Spokesman of the 6th Division of the Nigeria Army, Port Harcourt, Major Iweha Ikedichi, said the troops on “cordon and search operation” in the area would not be withdrawn until the perpetrators are arrested and the seized arms recovered. Iweha, who did not give the number of the soldiers killed, however, said the monarch was later released.
The Chairman of the Bille Council of Chiefs, Bennett Okpoki, who lamented the development yesterday, called for urgent Federal Government intervention.
Okpoki said Bille had been at the mercy of pirates, adding that on Friday a Port Harcourt-bound boat was attacked and one Impaisinba Igani, killed.
He said that the matter was reported to the 29th Battalion Tactical Headquarters of the Nigeria Army in the area.
Okpoki wondered why the military would lay siege to the community knowing the operations of pirates in the area.
Okpoki said the same criminals had also attacked the military formation and had a gun battle with soldiers.
He said: “Bille town in the Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State is under seizure by the Nigerian military. As early as 7 am this September 6, 2022, there were serious gunshots by the military.
“The palace of the Amayanabo of Bille was also invaded and the king, HRM LN.C Herbert, and his personal Aide, Mr. Damiete Alabo, were taken away by the military.
The military later released the king but left with the personal aide in the company of several others that were arrested. Until this moment, their whereabouts are unknown”.
The Spokesman of the 6th Division, Major Iweha, defended the presence of the troops in the community and sought the cooperation of the residents in tracking down the criminals.

Iweha said: “Our soldiers in the early hours of this (yesterday) morning carried out a cordon and search operation which is ongoing following the killing of soldiers who were on internal security operations around Bille community in Degema council of Rivers State with their weapons carted away.
“So, the operation will continue until the weapons of the soldiers are recovered. We solicit members of the community to please volunteer information that could lead us to the actual perpetrators of the crime.
“Usually, when an incident like this happen, criminals will hide in innocent communities. About the footage on the conduct of the personnel involved, we will review all of those after the operation and take appropriate action.
“Currently, soldiers are out and the idea is to as quickly as possible recover the weapons and track down the perpetrators.”
