A lawyer named Dejo Adeyanju has taken significant legal action on behalf of Stephen Abuwatseya, a cab driver who was allegedly assaulted by House of Representatives member Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh from Abia State.
Adeyanju has formally petitioned Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, urging a thorough investigation and prosecution of Ikwechegh for several serious offenses, including “grievous assault, abuse of power, attempted murder, and threats to life.”
The legal firm Deji Adeyanju and Partners, which represents Abuwatseya, emphasized the need for accountability in their petition. It highlighted the gravity of the allegations against the lawmaker and called for swift action to uphold the law. The petition, which was signed by Marvin Omorogbe, a founding partner of the firm, requests that the IGP take immediate steps to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that appropriate legal measures are taken against Ikwechegh. In a statement included in the petition, Omorogbe wrote, “We respectfully request that you initiate an investigation into the matters raised, with the aim of prosecuting Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh.”
The incident reportedly occurred when Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwechegh’s residence located in the Maitama area of Abuja. According to accounts of the event, tensions escalated quickly, resulting in an alleged assault. During this encounter, it is claimed that Ikwechegh threatened Abuwatseya, asserting that he would make the cab driver “disappear,” while adding that “nothing will happen” as a result of his actions. Furthermore, the lawmaker allegedly threatened to physically harm Abuwatseya, stating that he would beat him and lock him up in his generator house.
This case has raised concerns not only about the specific actions of Ikwechegh but also about the broader implications for the conduct of public officials and their treatment of citizens. Advocates for justice and accountability are closely monitoring the situation, as they await the response of the IGP and the subsequent legal actions that may arise from this troubling incident. The outcome could set a significant precedent for how similar cases involving politicians and their alleged abuse of power are handled in the future.
