The socio-political group Afenifere has voiced disappointment with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, criticizing it for what they see as an indifference to the hardships Nigerians are enduring due to increasing poverty, insecurity, and hunger.
Following a meeting at Afenifere leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s residence in Isanya-Ogbo, Ogun State, the group issued a statement, signed by Deputy Leader Oba Oladipo Olaitan and Deputy Secretary-General Alade Rotimi-John, expressing their concerns.
Afenifere condemned the government’s apparent disconnect from the “widespread suffering” across the country, citing recent policies such as the fuel price increase, which they believe have deepened the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
The group also expressed frustration over the lack of a clear plan from the Tinubu administration to address the worsening economic conditions, saying the absence of a structured program shows little regard for citizens’ well-being amid significant national challenges.
The statement reads, “Afenifere reviewed the unremitting distressing state of the nation’s social and economic situation under the President Bola Tinubu administration.
“Meeting observed that the distressful condition of the country is exemplified in pervasive hardship, unflagging insecurity and incapacitating hunger.
“The meeting noted the absence of official empathy respecting the people’s agonising situation.
“Meeting has instead observed an unwearying policy enunciation ostensibly aimed at compounding the woes of the people, e.g. the unabating fuel price hike.
“Meeting further observed the cavalier conduct of state affairs in, for instance, the absence of any coherent or unequivocal programme on the part of the government and its party.”
