A South African woman has shared her deeply emotional journey of resilience and faith after a traumatic car accident that left her paralyzed from the neck down.
Known on social media platform X as @Kalogo_Mojalefa, she recently opened up about the incident, revealing her regret over posting her achievements online, which she now links to a series of unexpected and life-altering events.
In 2023, she was on a high, celebrating an impressive milestone: an award for the highest overall performance in her academic department. Proud of her achievement, she shared the moment with her followers on social media. However, soon after completing her final exams, tragedy struck. On her way home, she was involved in a serious car accident that left her with a severe spinal cord injury, unable to move from the neck down. Her injuries not only robbed her of physical independence but also prevented her from completing her research, finishing her degree, and graduating.
The aftermath of the accident was harrowing. She endured a grueling six-month hospital stay, with three of those months in the intensive care unit. During this time, she underwent four high-risk surgeries in an attempt to stabilize her condition. At one point, her injuries were so severe that she required life support, and her family was called to the hospital in the middle of the night to say their final goodbyes. Miraculously, she pulled through, crediting her survival to God’s intervention, as she described, “I’m in awe of how God has carried me through.”
The recovery process has been an enormous challenge, as she adjusted to a life of complete dependency on others for daily needs. Despite her devastating injuries and the loss of her physical autonomy, she has shown remarkable resilience, finding humor and hope in the most challenging of circumstances. She even shared a surreal and memorable moment before one of her surgeries when an unfamiliar caller offered to pray for her. Though she found the prayer unusual, she later said it gave her strength, and after her surgery, she woke up—despite a tense delay that had everyone around her worried.
In an ironic twist, she recently survived a second car accident. Laughing about the ordeal, she noted that she was in a vehicle with five other people, but only her side was damaged. “Only my side got hit,” she remarked with a mix of humor and acceptance.
Reflecting on her journey, she now sees the dangers of oversharing on social media, saying, “When people say don’t post your achievements on social media, I now believe them.” The experience has left her both physically and emotionally changed, but her spirit remains unbroken. Her faith has become a guiding force, and she signs off her reflections with a message of gratitude: “With Jesus in the vessel, you can smile at a storm.”
