Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, the newly appointed Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, has made it clear that while he holds this federal position, his primary focus will be on advancing the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s political influence in Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections.
Ata has openly stated that his appointment serves not only a national purpose but also a strategic political objective to reclaim Kano for the APC.
Nigeria faces an urgent housing crisis, with the government estimating a national deficit of 28 million housing units as of 2023. Addressing this backlog would require a substantial N21 trillion, presenting a formidable challenge for Ata’s ministry. Yet, despite the enormity of his portfolio’s responsibilities, Ata has stressed that his dedication lies primarily in reshaping Kano’s political landscape in favor of his party.
Speaking candidly about his priorities, Ata emphasized the importance of regaining the APC’s foothold in his home state. “My appointment was mainly for political reasons. The APC has lost Kano State, but now we are determined to take it back,” he explained. According to him, the key area of focus will be Kano Central, where he himself has deep roots and connections.
Ata added, “I may hold a federal position as minister, but I’ll continue to work actively within my local ward. We are committed to doing everything in our power to see that the APC reclaims control of Kano State by 2027.”
Though Ata acknowledges the responsibilities that come with his role in housing and urban development, he has also pledged to make frequent visits to Kano. “Even with my assignment in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, I’ll fulfill my duties. But each week, I’ll be in Kano, engaging with local stakeholders and strategizing on how best to regain our political standing,” he told journalists.
Ata’s remarks signal a dual commitment, balancing his federal role with an intense focus on local politics in Kano. By keeping a close connection with his community and actively supporting the APC’s local efforts, he hopes to strengthen the party’s presence and secure a win for the APC in 2027.
