The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has raised a significant alarm regarding the emerging security threat posed by the Lakurawa terrorist group, which has become increasingly active in Nigeria’s northwest, particularly in Sokoto and Kebbi states.
Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the publicity secretary of the ACF, voiced the group’s concerns during an appearance on Channels Television on Monday. He highlighted the growing threat posed by the group, warning that their activities could severely jeopardize national security if not addressed promptly.
Muhammad-Baba detailed how the terrorist group has set up operational bases in certain regions, gradually taking control of local governance structures. In some areas, they are reportedly enforcing their own system of justice, effectively undermining the authority of traditional leaders and creating a parallel administration.
He emphasized the dangerous implications of such actions, stressing that the group’s influence is expanding and poses a direct challenge to the nation’s sovereignty. According to Muhammad-Baba, the Lakurawa group is not a new threat, and its activities have been on the radar of the Department of State Services (DSS). “We initially believed they had been driven out of the country, but it later emerged that there was an agreement for them to either leave or face attacks,” he explained.
The publicity secretary further warned that the group’s growing presence and ability to establish their own governance structures in Nigeria are alarming. “This is a major threat to national security. When a group like this is allowed to establish operational bases, set up their own security apparatus, and create a parallel justice system, it is tantamount to them taking over parts of our sovereignty,” he stated.
Muhammad-Baba called for immediate and decisive action from the government to neutralize this threat and restore order in the affected regions. He urged security agencies to ramp up their efforts to secure the nation’s borders and ensure that such groups do not further erode the country’s sovereignty or stability.
The ACF’s statement reflects growing concerns about the rising influence of terrorist groups in Nigeria’s northwest and the increasing challenge of managing security in these areas. The call to action underscores the urgency of addressing these threats to ensure the nation’s safety and maintain the integrity of its governance structures.
