Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives from Imo State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has confidently declared that Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State will not only contest but also win the governorship election in 2027.
Ugochinyere, who represents the Ideato Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, made this assertion during an address to his constituents in Akokwa, located in the Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State. His comments came amidst ongoing political tension in Rivers State, following the defection of 27 lawmakers from the state’s House of Assembly to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing the situation, Ugochinyere criticized the defecting lawmakers, asserting that their decision to switch parties predated the political crisis in the state. He argued that the remaining lawmakers still constituted a quorum, thereby preserving the functionality of the Assembly.
He questioned the motives behind certain political maneuvers aimed at undermining Governor Fubara’s administration. “Let me ask,” Ugochinyere said, “if you seize the allocation to Rivers State, can you guarantee security or the payment of salaries to teachers and other workers? They want to create instability in the state so they can impeach the governor. But let me tell you, Fubara will contest and win in 2027.”
The lawmaker further commended the judiciary for its role in maintaining constitutional order and urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, alongside her colleagues, to uphold justice in their rulings. He emphasized the need for fairness and adherence to the rule of law in resolving disputes that could significantly impact governance and democracy in the state.
Ugochinyere’s remarks reflect growing concerns about the use of political defections and financial manipulation to destabilize governance in Nigeria. His call for vigilance from the judiciary highlights the critical role of impartial institutions in safeguarding democratic processes, especially as political tension escalates ahead of the 2027 elections.
