The Nigerian Army has released investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo, three days after his arrest, sparking conversations about press freedom and accountability in Nigeria.

Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), was detained by operatives of the Nigerian Army’s 6th Division on allegations of involvement in illegal oil bunkering. The arrest drew widespread criticism, with many questioning the motives behind the detention of a journalist renowned for exposing corruption, abuse of power, and human rights violations.

The FIJ issued a statement on Friday demanding Soyombo’s immediate release and raising alarms over the growing threats to press freedom in the country.

FIJ Responds to Allegations

Following Soyombo’s release, FIJ announced on its social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), that the journalist was freed thanks to public and media pressure. The organization dismissed the Army’s claims as a “deliberate mischaracterisation,” emphasizing that Soyombo’s work as an investigative journalist often involves risky fieldwork.

“We can confirm that our founder, @fisayosoyombo, has now been released by @HQNigerianArmy, following the intense media campaign you all mounted,” FIJ wrote.

FIJ expressed concern over the safety of its founder, noting the sensitive information he had shared with the Army during his detention. “Our immediate concern is regarding the safety of Fisayo Soyombo. We hope his safety will not be jeopardized after his release.”

This incident highlights the increasing risks faced by journalists in Nigeria and underscores the critical need for a free and independent press to hold power accountable.
