Faruk Lawan Reflects on Personal Growth After Prison, Receives Support from Constituents
Faruk Lawan, a former chairman of the House of Representatives Appropriation Committee, has publicly reflected on his journey of personal transformation following a five-year prison sentence for accepting a $3 million bribe from oil tycoon Femi Otedola.
Speaking during a visit to his Shanono/Bagwai Federal Constituency on Saturday, Lawan expressed gratitude for the lessons learned during his time away, emphasizing that he has emerged as a better person. “Today, I am a better person, and I thank God for everything,” he said, addressing a gathering of supporters who accompanied him in a large convoy.
He clarified that his visit was not politically motivated but rather an opportunity to extend condolences, sympathize with the sick, and pay homage to traditional rulers and elders in the community.
Dressed in the signature red-and-white attire of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Lawan also revealed that he is not currently affiliated with any political group. “I am freelancing in politics and presently do not belong to anybody,” he stated, signaling a period of reflection and independence in his political career.
During his visit, Lawan was warmly welcomed by Alhaji Nura Shehu Ahmad, the District Head of Bagwai and Magajin Rafi of Kano. The traditional leader described Lawan’s imprisonment as “a blessing in disguise,” not only for Lawan but also for his supporters.
“Today, many of us who were once your enemies have become your loyal supporters. We have come to understand the real Faruk Lawan and his passion for his people,” the District Head said. He also commended Lawan for maintaining strong ties with the community during his incarceration, emphasizing the former lawmaker’s continued support for the needy and his efforts to remain connected.
“Even while in prison, you reached out to us, supported the less privileged, and inquired about the well-being of many. We appreciate and cherish you for that,” the District Head added.
The visit marked a significant moment of reconciliation and renewed support for Lawan, whose political journey has been marked by controversy and redemption. While his future in politics remains uncertain, the reception from his constituents suggests that he still holds a place of influence and respect within the community.
