Segun Sowunmi, a former gubernatorial aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, has expressed uncertainty regarding the plans of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Sowunmi made this disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he shared his personal interactions with Atiku concerning the latter’s political future.

Sowunmi, who holds Atiku in high regard, revealed that he has twice asked the former Vice President about his intentions to run for president again in 2027, but has yet to receive a definitive response. “Atiku Abubakar is one man I love with my bones,” Sowunmi said, acknowledging the complexity of the decision. He explained that Atiku’s responses have been ambiguous, leaving him unsure about the former Vice President’s political aspirations.

“I have asked him twice, are you running or are you done?” Sowunmi continued. “He was quiet and did not answer; he was still in a reflective mood.” Sowunmi expressed respect for Atiku’s silence, suggesting that the weight of such a decision, particularly the burden of running for office, requires deep reflection. “Any sensible person will know that the burden of an election is heavy,” he remarked.

Sowunmi also indicated that whatever Atiku’s eventual answer may be, the PDP will accept it and move forward accordingly. “If he answers, good, and whatever answer he gives, we will take it to the next level,” he concluded, emphasizing that the party would proceed in line with Atiku’s decision, whether he chooses to run or not.
