The Enugu State Police Command has announced the arrest of two male suspects involved in armed robbery, as part of the ongoing efforts to ensure a peaceful holiday season in the state.
The arrests were made by police operatives in collaboration with local security groups, with both suspects facing serious criminal charges.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, provided details of the operations. According to Ndukwe, five firearms, two live cartridges, a stolen tricycle, and other incriminating items were recovered from the suspects, highlighting the seriousness of the crime.
The first arrest occurred on November 22, 2024, around 10:30 p.m., when police officers from the Abakpa Division, supported by members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, apprehended a 29-year-old suspect, Daniel Aniude, from Isiekenise Street in Abakpa-Nike, Enugu. Aniude and his accomplices, who managed to flee the scene, were caught in the act of robbing a female victim. During the operation, officers recovered an imitation pistol from the scene. Following further investigation by the Anti-Robbery Section (D9) of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Aniude was arraigned in court and remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Custodial Service.
The second arrest took place on November 12, 2024, at about 2:00 p.m., when police operatives from the Nkanu East Division, working with Neighbourhood Watch members and vigilant citizens, apprehended a 25-year-old suspect, Uzor David, from the Isu community in Aniocha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. David had earlier rented a tricycle from the Holy Ghost area in Enugu to Nara in Nkanu East. Upon reaching his destination, he shot the tricyclist in the hand with a locally made pistol, before attempting to steal the vehicle. However, quick intervention by security operatives led to David’s arrest, with the stolen tricycle and firearm recovered from him. The injured tricyclist is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition. David will face criminal charges once ongoing investigations are concluded.
DSP Ndukwe assured the public that the Enugu State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of residents, particularly as the Christmas season approaches. He emphasized that the police would continue to work closely with community watch groups and other stakeholders to maintain law and order in the state during the festive period.
