Recent Terror Attacks Caused By Foreign Fighters – DHQ

The Defence Headquarters has attributed the surge in banditry across Nigeria’s North East and North West regions to the involvement of foreign insurgents.

Over recent weeks, both military installations and civilian populations have faced a series of deadly attacks, raising concerns about the escalating violence. Addressing these developments during the year’s first military briefing, the outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, identified fighters from the Sahel region collaborating with local accomplices as a key factor in the resurgence of terrorist activities.

Maj. Gen. Edward reassured Nigerians of the military’s dedication to combating terrorism, emphasizing that both direct military actions and international collaborations are being employed to weaken the insurgents’ resolve.

He stated, “The recent rise in terror attacks can largely be attributed to the infiltration of foreign fighters from the Sahel, who have joined forces with local collaborators. These accomplices act as informants, providing critical information about troop movements, thereby enabling the insurgents’ operations.”

Despite acknowledging occasional setbacks, he reiterated the armed forces’ strategic commitment to defeating the insurgents. “Our overarching objective is to break the terrorists’ will to fight. This involves neutralizing their operatives, including key commanders, and dismantling their logistical, administrative, and combat capabilities. Beyond military engagement, we are leveraging regional and international partnerships while utilizing media platforms to intensify pressure on these groups.”

Maj. Gen. Edward further highlighted the protracted nature of counterterrorism efforts, urging patience and support from the public. “Wars are won by systematically eroding the enemy’s will to fight. This is not a short-term operation but a sustained campaign. Through relentless military actions and international collaboration, we aim to create a safer environment, ultimately ensuring the defeat of these terrorist elements.”

The military’s ongoing efforts reflect a comprehensive approach, combining tactical operations with long-term strategies to address the root causes of insurgency. Maj. Gen. Edward expressed optimism that these measures would lead to lasting peace and security in Nigeria.
