Ohanaeze Ndigbo Condemns Amaechi’s Call for Nigerians to Snatch Power from Tinubu

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has strongly criticized former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, over his recent comments about President Bola Tinubu.

Amaechi, speaking in Abuja at a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, alleged that Nigerian politicians often resort to stealing and violence to win elections and retain power. He also claimed that those hoping President Tinubu would relinquish power in 2027 were wasting their time.

Ohanaeze: Amaechi’s Remarks Are Undemocratic and Dangerous

Reacting to Amaechi’s statements, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in a statement by its Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, in Kaduna on Saturday, condemned the former minister’s rhetoric as a threat to democracy, peace, and national stability.

The group described Amaechi’s remarks as divisive, warning that calls for forceful power struggles in 2027 could incite political tension and undermine Nigeria’s democratic processes. It reaffirmed that the Igbo people would never support any political conspiracy against a legitimately elected government.

Furthermore, Ohanaeze aligned with the stance of the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, who called on Amaechi to desist from making inflammatory statements.

Ohanaeze Reiterates Support for Tinubu’s Leadership

The statement further emphasized Ohanaeze’s commitment to democratic principles, rejecting any notion of power grabs through undemocratic means.

“Amaechi’s outrageous call for Nigerians to resort to ‘brutal force’ in an attempt to remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 contradicts the principles of democracy, civility, and peace that we uphold,” the statement read.

“His assertion that politicians must be willing to ‘steal, maim, and kill’ to retain power is not only reckless but a dangerous narrative that threatens the fabric of our society.”

“We strongly condemn these reckless and incendiary comments against President Tinubu. The Ndigbo will never support any political plot aimed at destabilizing the country or undermining a legitimately elected government.”

Ohanaeze reaffirmed its full support for Tinubu’s administration, stating that the future of Nigeria should be built on democratic principles, legitimate leadership, and national unity.

The organization also issued a stern warning to Amaechi, urging him to retract his statements and refrain from making further divisive comments.

“We echo the urgent call by Dr. Bello Matawalle for Amaechi to withdraw his statements and cease from inciting the populace. He must take responsibility for his words or face the consequences of his actions.”

Ohanaeze concluded by emphasizing that its primary goal remains promoting peace, stability, and inclusive governance in Nigeria, ensuring that all ethnic groups work together for national progress.
