Obasa’s Future Hangs in the Balance as GAC Meets to Decide New Lagos Assembly Speaker

Obasa’s Future Hangs in the Balance as GAC Meets to Decide New Lagos Assembly Speaker

A significant development in the Lagos House of Assembly leadership impasse has emerged as the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) is scheduled to meet today.

The council will nominate three lawmakers from the Lagos West Senatorial District to replace Hon. Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker.

Background and Recent Changes

On January 13, a decisive move was made within the 40-member Assembly when 32 lawmakers voted to oust Obasa over allegations of fraudulent practices and high-handed conduct. His removal led to the appointment of Hon. Mojisola Meranda as Speaker. However, this decision did not sit well with the APC leadership, prompting further internal adjustments. Despite earlier reports hinting at the possibility of reinstating Obasa, sources confirm that his departure is final and irreversible. As a result, Meranda is anticipated to step down from the Speaker’s chair and return to her former role as Deputy Speaker.

Ensuring Regional Balance

The current reshuffling aims to maintain regional representation in the Assembly’s leadership. Since Obasa was a representative from the Lagos West Senatorial District, the GAC has set out to choose a replacement from the same region. This move is intended to preserve the regional balance within the legislative body.

Potential Candidates

The Lagos West Senatorial District is home to eight experienced lawmakers who could vie for the position. The candidates under consideration include:

  • Hon. Setonji David (Badagry 2)
  • Hon. Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaye 1)
  • Hon. Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 1)
  • Hon. Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2)
  • Hon. Lukmon Olumoh (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1)
  • Hon. Age Sulaimon (Amuwo-Odofin 2)
  • Hon. Surajudeen Tijani (Ojo 2)
  • Hon. Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 2)

From these eight, the GAC will select three nominees. One of these three will eventually be elected as the new Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly.

The Road Ahead

Today’s meeting of the GAC marks a critical juncture in resolving the ongoing leadership crisis. The council’s nominations are expected to bring clarity and a fresh direction to the Assembly, as well as address internal concerns regarding governance and accountability. Observers and political stakeholders alike will be closely watching the developments, as the decision will play a pivotal role in shaping the Assembly’s future dynamics and its approach to legislative governance.
