The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has dismissed speculations that Northern politicians are plotting against President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
Speaking in an interview with The Sun, Basiru rejected claims that the North is uniting against Tinubu, describing such assumptions as a hasty generalization fueled by disgruntled politicians and social media narratives.
Strong Northern Support for Tinubu
Basiru emphasized that several key figures in Tinubu’s administration—including Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Minister of Economic Development, and the APC National Chairman—are from the North and remain firmly committed to supporting the president.
He pointed to recent political events in Katsina State, where chants of “Sai Tinubu” echoed during public gatherings, signaling strong grassroots support for the president.
Growing APC Influence in the North
Basiru further noted that during the APC’s local government election campaign in Katsina, several opposition figures, including former Governor Ibrahim Shema, defected to the ruling party, reinforcing Tinubu’s foothold in the region.
“In Kaduna State, our governor is performing exceptionally well, and in Kano, the support for the APC remains strong. Claims that the North is against Tinubu are baseless,” he stated.
Focus on Governance Over 2027 Politics
According to Basiru, the Tinubu administration is prioritizing the Renewed Hope Agenda rather than engaging in premature political battles for 2027.
“We are not idle politicians who sit around scheming for elections that are still years away. Right now, we are focused on delivering good governance, and when the time comes for politics, we will engage accordingly,” he asserted.
Basiru’s remarks come amid growing speculation about internal political divisions within the APC, particularly regarding power shifts after Tinubu’s tenure. However, his statement suggests that the ruling party remains confident in its political strength and unity in the North.
