Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South Senatorial District under the Labour Party (LP), has commended President Bola Tinubu for his “remarkable courage” in leading Nigeria through difficult times.
Imasuen expressed his admiration for Tinubu’s leadership, emphasizing the president’s unyielding resolve in addressing critical national issues, even when faced with political risks.
During an interactive session with journalists in Benin City, Edo State capital, over the weekend, Imasuen advocated for the South to retain the presidency in 2027 to maintain the existing power rotation arrangement.
He firmly stated that Tinubu deserves a second term due to his strong stance on vital national matters, despite potential risks to his re-election prospects.
“President Tinubu is a man of courage. He doesn’t shy away from doing what he believes is right, even when it may harm his chances of re-election,” Imasuen said. “For example, the Tax Bill—despite heated debates and significant opposition in Senate sessions, he never wavered. That kind of leadership deserves our support.”
The senator also highlighted the unwritten zoning agreement in Nigeria, where the presidency alternates between the North and South every eight years. He argued that just as the country allowed former President Buhari to complete his two terms despite dissatisfaction with his administration, the same should be extended to President Tinubu.
Imasuen, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, is the only Labour Party senator in Edo State, with the other two senatorial zones—Edo North and Edo Central—represented by members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including former governor Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
In addition to his support for President Tinubu, Imasuen also weighed in on the recent Supreme Court ruling that removed Julius Abure, his fellow Edo indigene, as the national chairman of the Labour Party. Imasuen described the ruling as a “welcome development” and criticized Abure for focusing on personal interests rather than the unity and growth of the party.
“Abure lost focus. He dragged the party into unnecessary legal battles, which caused fragmentation within the Labour Party. Now that the Supreme Court has spoken, we need to ask ourselves, where do we go from here?” Imasuen stated.
The senator expressed concern about the state of the party, noting that many members have already left and questioning whether the court’s decision would revitalize it.
Imasuen also praised President Tinubu for his determination to conduct a national census before the 2027 elections, despite resistance from some quarters. He emphasized that accurate population data is crucial for effective national planning and the credibility of the democratic process.
“I commend the president for insisting on a proper census. It’s a bold decision, and I hope it is fully implemented before the next elections,” Imasuen said.
In conclusion, Senator Imasuen called on journalists to continue being partners in his political journey, promising to keep them updated on significant developments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
