A somber mood has enveloped the family and friends of Olaoluwa Subomi Lawson, a 200-level student of Babcock University, following his untimely death by suicide at his father’s residence located within Redemption Camp City, Ogun State.
The heartbreaking incident, confirmed on Tuesday by a relative based in Festac Town, Lagos, has sent shockwaves through both the university community and social media.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the family became aware of the tragic development after Olaoluwa’s mother who resides in the United Kingdom raised the alarm. She reportedly informed the family that her son had taken his own life by hanging himself in his room.
While Olaoluwa was enrolled at Babcock University in Ilishan-Remo, details surrounding what may have driven him to such a tragic decision remain unclear. Authorities are said to have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to his death.
The loss has sparked conversations online about the importance of mental health awareness and support for young people facing emotional struggles, especially in academic settings.
UNIZIK Student Slumps and Dies During Football Match
In a separate but equally devastating incident, a student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has died after collapsing in the middle of a football match.
The student, identified as Tochi Martins Attah—popularly known among friends as “T-funds”—collapsed on the morning of Monday, July 7, 2025, at Elmada Hostel, located within the university premises.
Sources say Tochi was previously studying Microbiology before transferring to a medical-related course. His sudden death has left the student community in shock and mourning.
Engr. Sabastine Aku, President of the Useh Youths, confirmed the incident via a heartfelt message shared on social media, expressing condolences to the bereaved family and describing Tochi as a promising young man whose life was cut tragically short.
While the exact medical cause of his collapse has not yet been disclosed, university officials and emergency responders are said to be reviewing the events that led to the fatal incident.
