The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied authorising a post-match statement that criticised striker Cyriel Dessers and captain William Troost-Ekong following the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with South Africa in Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The statement, attributed to the NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, accused Dessers of being sluggish and blamed Troost-Ekong for the own goal that gave Bafana Bafana the lead.
Reacting on Wednesday, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi dismissed the comments, stressing that they did not represent the federation’s official position.
“I saw the release just like everyone else did. Nobody in the Federation is happy with it. The NFF did not authorise that statement. We respect all our players, and blaming an individual for a team result is unfair,” Sanusi said.
He emphasised that both victories and defeats are collective, insisting no player should be singled out. Sanusi also defended Troost-Ekong, recalling his outstanding performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named Most Valuable Player.
“It was an unfortunate own goal. His intention was to clear the ball, and anyone who understands football knows such things happen,” he explained.
Sanusi assured that the Super Eagles remain united as they prepare for the remaining World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. He confirmed that internal disciplinary measures would be taken over the unauthorised release.
Nigeria currently sit third in Group C with 11 points from eight matches, while South Africa top the group with 17 points. The Super Eagles must now defeat Lesotho and Benin Republic in their final fixtures and hope rivals drop points to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
