A new political crisis is reportedly brewing within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following sharp remarks by former Rotimi Amaechi directed at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his repeated claims of never losing a presidential primary election.
The growing tension within the opposition coalition is said to be linked to allegations that some influential stakeholders are allegedly pushing for Atiku to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate through a consensus arrangement rather than an open contest.
Sources familiar with the development claimed that the reported move has unsettled several camps within the party, with accusations of favoritism and secret negotiations already threatening unity within the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during an interview, Amaechi dismissed Atiku’s record in party primaries, arguing that success in securing party tickets means little if it does not translate into victory at the general election.
According to the former governor of Rivers State, Atiku’s repeated emergence at party primaries has not resulted in electoral success at the national level.
“I listen when they say former Vice President Atiku said he has never failed the primaries before. I hope this will be the first time he fails the primaries. That is not the issue, the issue is that every time he has passed the primaries, he has not won the election,” Amaechi stated.
The comments have intensified speculation about an impending power struggle within the ADC as aspirants and party stakeholders continue consultations and political manoeuvring ahead of the battle for the presidential ticket.
Political observers say the latest exchange between Amaechi and Atiku has further exposed deep divisions within the party, especially amid reports of an alleged consensus arrangement designed to favour certain aspirants.
The development is expected to heighten internal tensions within the ADC as the opposition coalition attempts to position itself as a major force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
