A planned wedding in Newcastle was abruptly called off after the groom and his father were arrested for drunk driving just hours before the ceremony.
The incident occurred amid a large-scale enforcement operation carried out by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), which led to the arrest of 45 motorists between Saturday night, April 4, and the early hours of Sunday, April 5, 2026.
Confirming the development, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, disclosed that the arrests followed intensified efforts to curb drunk driving in the area.
Among those detained were individuals from various professional backgrounds, including a lecturer, a safety manager, teachers, nurses, a pharmacist, a municipal liaison officer, and a student. Authorities noted that many of those apprehended were unable to provide satisfactory explanations for their actions during the operation.
According to officials, the groom and his father were taken into custody shortly before the wedding, which had been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. Their arrest ultimately forced the cancellation of the ceremony, drawing widespread attention to the incident.
KwaZulu-Natal’s Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport, Siboniso Duma, issued a firm directive during the operation, instructing enforcement officers to take strict action against offenders, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach to drunk driving.
The incident has since sparked conversations around road safety and personal responsibility, particularly as authorities continue to intensify crackdowns aimed at reducing alcohol-related accidents across the province.
