Popular Nigerian rapper Blaqbonez has revealed that he has never participated in any election in Nigeria, saying years of disappointment with the country’s leadership and lack of progress made him lose faith in the political system.
The music star made the disclosure during a recent appearance on the Off The Record podcast, where he spoke candidly about his frustrations with the state of the nation and why he feels disconnected from Nigeria’s political process.
According to Blaqbonez, many of the positive changes he once hoped to see in the country never materialised, leading him to mentally distance himself from the system.
“I haven’t voted before. I kind of feel like I clocked out of Nigeria,” the rapper said during the interview.
He explained that repeated disappointment over governance and national development contributed to his growing skepticism about the possibility of meaningful change in the country.
“Too many things that I hoped would have happened haven’t happened, and I’m just like, this country is just bound to be like this,” he stated.
Blaqbonez also argued that Nigeria’s leadership problems reflect deeper issues within society itself, suggesting that political leaders are often a mirror of the people they govern.
“I feel like our leaders are a representation of us. I don’t see any difference regardless of the party,” he added.
Using a metaphor to describe his concerns about governance in the country, the rapper said lasting change would be difficult if the foundation of the system remains flawed.
“There are so many branches of a tree if the root is rotten. So I feel like I don’t know if I believe in the vision of Nigeria,” he said.
The rapper further stated that he believes something major and transformative would need to happen before he can regain confidence in the country’s future.
“I feel like something drastic has to happen first for me to believe,” he added.
Speaking on the future of politics in Africa, Blaqbonez expressed the opinion that meaningful change would likely come from younger generations, while questioning why younger candidates rarely emerge as major contenders in leadership positions.
“The change that we would need to see, especially in African countries, would need to come from this generation. But why can we never get a young candidate?” he asked.
His comments have since sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians debating youth participation in politics, voter apathy, and growing frustration over governance and leadership across the country.
