A Nigerian mother has shared an emotional story of how a doctor’s decision to refuse her request for permanent birth control later took on profound meaning following the death of her seven-year-old son.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, the woman recounted that during her pregnancy with twins last year, she had decided she no longer wanted to have children and planned to undergo an elective Caesarean section partly because she intended to have her fallopian tubes tied during the procedure.
According to her, she repeatedly informed her doctor during antenatal visits that she wanted the sterilisation procedure carried out immediately after the delivery of her twins.
She said the doctor initially appeared to agree with the plan, but when it was time to sign the consent forms before the operation, he changed his mind and advised her against making the decision.
The mother recalled that the doctor urged her to reconsider, explaining that she was still young and that life was unpredictable.
According to her, the doctor told her she could one day experience major changes in life, such as divorce or the loss of a child, which might make her desire another pregnancy in the future.
Despite pleading with him to proceed with the sterilisation, she said the doctor refused, insisting that she might one day appreciate his decision.
At the time, she admitted she did not fully understand why the doctor was so determined to discourage her.
However, everything changed after tragedy struck.
The grieving mother revealed that she lost her seven-year-old son on April 1, 2026, an experience she said completely altered her perspective.
Looking back, she said she now understands what her doctor meant and expressed deep gratitude for his refusal to perform the procedure.
Sharing the emotional experience, she wrote:
“On this day I went to the hospital to sign for my doctor to close my fallopian tubes after my twins’ birth by C-section.
“During my antenatal in my twins’ pregnancy, I always begged my doctor to close my fallopian tubes after the CS because that’s the main reason why I chose to deliver them through CS.
“He agreed to do that for me but on this day last year, I went to sign the papers as we agreed and the doctor started advising me not to do that. He said I could be a divorcee tomorrow or I could lose a child tomorrow and still want to give birth again.
“I pleaded and begged him to do it for me, but he refused and said I am too young to do that and life is unpredictable. He said I will remember this day and forever be grateful to him.
“I didn’t really understand what he meant by that till I lost my seven-year-old son this 1st April 2026.
“May God continue to bless Doctor Chinweike for me. It’s good to take advice sometimes.”
Her story has since sparked emotional reactions on social media, with many users expressing sympathy over the loss of her son while reflecting on how life’s unexpected turns can change deeply held decisions. Others praised the doctor’s cautious approach, although some also noted that decisions about permanent contraception are deeply personal and should be made through careful discussions between patients and their healthcare providers.
