2027: Peter Obi Declares Himself Better Than Tinubu, Atiku, Cites Leadership Record

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared himself more qualified than President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to lead Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi made the declaration on Saturday during a town hall meeting in Owerri, Imo State, as part of his ongoing engagements with Nigerians ahead of the next presidential election.

The former Anambra State governor said he considers himself superior to the two political figures in terms of competence, character, capacity and compassion, which he described as essential qualities for effective leadership.

He argued that his record in office, particularly his management of Anambra State without excessive borrowing, demonstrated his ability to manage public resources responsibly.

Obi also cited his performance in the 2023 presidential election, during which he defeated Tinubu in Lagos State, as evidence of his political strength and growing acceptance among Nigerians.

He criticised Tinubu’s administration, insisting that the President had failed to fulfil the promises contained in his Renewed Hope agenda.

Obi also described Atiku as representing the old political order, which he claimed Nigerians were no longer interested in retaining.

“I’m better than Tinubu, Atiku. I have a better track record. I managed Anambra well without borrowing. I left billions in the coffers. Nigerians know who can manage this country,” he said.

His remarks have since generated reactions on social media, with supporters and critics expressing contrasting views about his assessment of himself against the two political heavyweights.

While supporters of Tinubu and Atiku have criticised Obi’s declaration, describing it as political bragging and an attempt to promote his presidential ambition, his supporters, popularly known as Obidients, have defended his position, citing his record as governor and his performance in the 2023 election.

The development comes as political activities and consultations gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
