The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has declared that politicians with genuine ambitions of winning elections in Nigeria must align themselves with the ruling party.
Basiru stated that the APC remains the most formidable political platform in the country, insisting that the party has consistently demonstrated its ability to secure victory at the national level.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, the APC chieftain argued that, aside from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), no other political platform or coalition has proven itself capable of winning presidential elections in Nigeria.
According to him, many of the emerging political coalitions positioning themselves against the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections have not shown any meaningful electoral strength.
“Aside from the PDP, APC remains the strongest political machinery for winning elections in Nigeria today,” Basiru said.
“Many of the groups calling themselves coalitions are yet to prove themselves as credible electoral forces, and for now, they appear more like political distractions than serious alternatives,” he added.
The APC secretary maintained that the ruling party’s track record in national politics places it ahead of rival political groups seeking to challenge its dominance in future elections.
The APC rose to power in 2015 following the successful merger of several opposition parties in 2013, a political alliance widely regarded as one of the most significant developments in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The coalition brought together major opposition blocs, including the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), which later united under the APC platform with a “change” agenda.
The party subsequently presented Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate for the 2015 election.
Buhari went on to defeat then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in a historic election that marked the first time in Nigeria’s political history that an opposition party successfully defeated a sitting government through the ballot box.
Basiru’s comments come amid increasing political consultations and coalition talks among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections, with several groups seeking to build alliances capable of challenging the APC’s hold on power.
However, the APC leadership continues to project confidence that the ruling party remains the most organised and electorally tested political structure in the country.
