Armed bandits have abducted three Qur’an memorizers from the same family in Niger State, intensifying concerns over persistent insecurity in parts of the region.
The victims were reportedly traveling to Kotonkoro in Mariga to attend a family or religious gathering when they were ambushed along the route by the attackers.
Security analyst Bakatsine disclosed the incident on Sunday, March 1, 2026, noting that the assailants intercepted the travelers and whisked them away to an undisclosed location.
According to available information, the victims have remained in captivity for more than three weeks, with their family struggling to secure their release. Sources familiar with the situation said the kidnappers are demanding a ransom of ₦8 million and have issued a four-day ultimatum, starting from Saturday, for the payment to be made.
The abduction underscores the continuing threat posed by armed groups operating in remote communities and along rural highways, where travelers are often vulnerable due to limited security presence. Residents in affected areas have repeatedly called for intensified patrols and stronger protective measures to curb recurring kidnappings.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation regarding any rescue operation or arrests linked to the incident, while efforts to secure the victims’ safe return remain ongoing.
