ENUGU, Nigeria — Coal City University, Enugu, has strongly rejected allegations contained in recent publications by Sahara Reporters, describing the reports as false, misleading, malicious, and unverified, while demanding an immediate retraction and correction of the claims.
In a press statement issued on June 18, 2026, the university’s management said the reports presented a distorted picture of the institution’s operations, administration, and recent events, insisting that the allegations lacked factual basis and were published without proper verification.
The institution noted that the publications followed an earlier report published in March 2026 alleging that the university admitted students into a Law programme beyond approved regulatory limits. According to the management, the allegation was unfounded because Coal City University neither operates a Faculty of Law nor offers a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) programme. The university maintained that it could not have admitted students into a programme that does not exist within the institution.
Management also dismissed claims regarding salary non-payment and an alleged strike action by members of staff, describing the allegations as deliberate misrepresentations aimed at creating a false impression about the university’s condition and operations. The statement stressed that academic and administrative activities have continued uninterrupted in line with approved schedules and institutional policies.
Addressing reports surrounding a June 10, 2026 incident involving a student and some university personnel, the institution stated that Sahara Reporters presented an inaccurate account of the matter. The university said it had already taken preliminary disciplinary measures before the publication of the report, including the suspension of all staff and students directly involved and the establishment of a Review Committee to investigate the incident and make recommendations to management.
Coal City University further disclosed that the student at the centre of the incident is a beneficiary of its scholarship programme, a development it said demonstrates the institution’s commitment to supporting students and expanding access to quality higher education. However, the university emphasized that this status would not influence its commitment to a fair, impartial, and thorough review of the matter.
The management also rejected what it described as inaccurate and unsubstantiated claims relating to the university’s academic activities, internal administration, and treatment of members of its community. It reaffirmed that the institution remains fully operational, with teaching, examinations, research, student services, and other programmes continuing without disruption.
Expressing concern over the potential impact of the reports on its reputation, the university accused Sahara Reporters of failing to verify the allegations and of not giving adequate representation to the institution’s position before publication. It urged members of the public to disregard the allegations and rely on information released through the university’s official communication channels.
The university disclosed that its legal advisers have been instructed to formally engage Sahara Reporters and demand an immediate retraction of the publications, along with appropriate corrective measures. According to the statement, the institution expects the reports to be withdrawn and the record corrected in the interest of fairness, accuracy, and responsible journalism.
Coal City University reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence and stated that it would take all lawful steps necessary to protect its reputation and institutional integrity.
