The Akwa Ibom State High Court has revoked the bail earlier granted to a defendant standing trial over the alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old boy, intensifying legal proceedings in a case that has drawn widespread public concern.
The decision was delivered on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, by Justice Okon Okon in Uyo, the state capital. The court acted after defence counsel withdrew from representing the accused, citing repeated inconsistencies in his client’s court appearances.
The affected defendant, David Udoh James, is among several individuals being prosecuted over the alleged abuse of a Junior Secondary School student from the Etoi community in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Court Orders Surety to Produce Defendant
In addition to cancelling the bail, the court directed the surety to ensure the defendant is produced at the next hearing scheduled for March 10, 2026. The judge warned that failure to comply with the order could result in legal consequences for the surety.
Proceedings were closely followed by journalists and members of the public as the matter continues to generate strong reactions across the state.
Allegations Date Back Several Years
The case gained prominence following claims that the minor was subjected to repeated abuse over a prolonged period beginning in his primary school years. Earlier accounts alleged that the child was initially lured by a night security guard attached to QIC School Etoi and subsequently introduced to other adults.
The suspects were also accused of issuing threats to prevent the victim from speaking out.
The allegations reportedly came to light after the boy developed health complications, prompting his parents to seek answers and medical examinations as part of the investigation.
Calls for Justice and Child Protection
The victim’s mother had earlier appealed for assistance, explaining that financial constraints initially made it difficult for the family to pursue the case. Community leaders and stakeholders have since called on authorities to ensure justice is served and to strengthen systems that protect children from abuse.
Following police intervention, the suspects were arrested and formally charged.
With bail now revoked and fresh directives issued by the court, the trial is expected to resume in March as the judiciary moves to ensure compliance and continue prosecution of the case.
