End of the Road: Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Dreams End As Intercontinental Play-offs Begin Today

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup have all but ended, with attention turning to the intercontinental play-offs that begin today, March 26, in Mexico.

Six countries from five confederations are battling for the final two slots at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

After a troubled qualifying campaign, the Super Eagles of Nigeria were forced to resort to legal appeals to keep slim hopes alive. Naija News reports that the Democratic Republic of the Congo reached the final round after beating Nigeria 4-3 on penalties in Morocco last November.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) petitioned FIFA over alleged ineligible players, but the case was dismissed.

The appeal now heads to the FIFA Appeals Committee and could ultimately be decided by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), although any ruling may not be made until after the World Cup.

The lowest-ranked sides, Bolivia, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname, meet in semi-finals before facing DR Congo or Iraq. The winner joins Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan in Group K.

Nigeria used three coaches during qualifying, including José Peseiro, Finidi George and Eric Chelle. Despite wins over Gabon and Rwanda, costly draws against Zimbabwe, Lesotho and South Africa proved decisive.

Nigeria now face a second straight World Cup absence, raising fresh questions about the administration of football in a country that was once ranked the 5th best soccer-playing nation in the world.

Below is the schedule for the 2026 FIFA World Cup intercontinental play-offs

Pathway 1

Semi-final (March 27): New Caledonia Vs Jamaica

Final (March 31): DR Congo vs the winner of New Caledonia Vs Jamaica

Pathway 2

Semi-final (March 26): Bolivia vs Suriname
