An 11-year-old boy has made his first court appearance in Pennsylvania, United States, after being charged as an adult with criminal homicide over the fatal shooting of his adoptive father earlier this year.
The child, identified as Clayton Dietz, was escorted into the courthouse by probation officials on Thursday, February 19, for a preliminary hearing. Authorities allege that he shot and killed 42-year-old Douglas Dietz on January 13 inside their home in Duncannon Borough.
Allegations From Investigators
According to prosecutors, the boy allegedly fired a shot at his stepfather while the man was asleep, striking him in the head. Investigators say the firearm was taken from a secured safe located in the parents’ bedroom.
Court records indicate that the incident may have followed a family dispute. The boy was reportedly upset after his Nintendo Switch gaming device had been taken away as a disciplinary measure.
An affidavit submitted by law enforcement states that the child entered the bedroom believing the safe contained his confiscated console, but instead discovered a revolver.
Mother’s Account of the Incident
The boy’s mother, Jillian, told investigators she was awakened by a loud sound and initially assumed it was fireworks. When she tried to rouse her husband and got no response, she noticed a liquid dripping onto the floor, which she later realized was blood.
Police documents further claim the child ran into the room shouting that his father was dead. Officers responding to the scene reportedly heard him admit responsibility.
Legal Debate Over Adult Charges
Despite his age, prosecutors filed the case in adult criminal court a decision that has drawn significant public attention and legal debate. Charging minors as adults is permitted in certain serious cases under Pennsylvania law, particularly those involving homicide.
The defence team, however, is pushing to have the matter transferred to juvenile court. Speaking after the hearing to local broadcaster CBS 21, the boy’s attorney said they would seek to move the case into the juvenile justice system, which focuses more on rehabilitation than punishment.
