Supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in Kano State on Friday staged a peaceful protest at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, over the omission of the party’s governorship candidate, Aminu Gwarzo, and his running mate, Mustapha Rabiu, from the final list for the 2027 governorship election.
The protesters who stormed the commission’s office in Kano, demanded that INEC urgently correct the error and publish the names of both candidates to allow the party to take part in the election.
The protest came days after the Kano chapter of the NDC complained about the omission of its governorship candidate from the final list released by the electoral umpire.
The party had said it was not responsible for the omission, blaming it on a computer glitch from INEC, and insisted it completed all required nomination processes.
At the protest ground, NDC leaders called on the commission to fix the anomaly and include their candidates in the final list, maintaining that the party met all conditions for the election.
The party’s Public Relations Officer in the state, Yusif Fasaha, had earlier urged members and supporters to remain calm while the leadership engages INEC on the matter.
“I want to assure you that, as the PRO of the party, the problem is not from us. We have consulted INEC, and they told us that the problem was from the computer and that they would rectify it,” he said.
