United States President Donald Trump has joked that he could relocate to Israel and become the country’s prime minister if Americans eventually grow tired of his leadership.
Trump made the remark on Tuesday during an interview with Fox News, coinciding with the US midterm elections.
Speaking about the close relationship between Washington and Tel Aviv, the American leader claimed that he enjoys overwhelming public support in Israel, putting his approval rating in the country at 99 per cent.
“My approval rating in Israel is 99 per cent. If people in the United States get fed up with me, I’ll move to Israel and become prime minister,” he said.
The President’s comment came amid discussions about the longstanding diplomatic and military relationship between the United States and Israel.
During the interview, Trump also disclosed that Washington would discontinue its annual financial aid of approximately $4 billion to Israel from 2027, following an agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He explained that Israel no longer needed the financial assistance but would continue purchasing military equipment and weapons from the United States.
According to Trump, the proposed arrangement would not end military cooperation between both countries, as Israel would remain a major buyer of American defence equipment.
Gists9ja reports that this is not the first time Trump has joked about relocating to Israel to become its prime minister if he loses public support in the United States.
The American President made a similar remark in May this year, also referencing his claimed popularity among Israelis.
